In the Ugandan slum of Wakaliga, a thriving action film industry called Wakaliwood has emerged. Mixing elements of Western action films and Chinese Kung Fu movies with Ugandan culture, Wakaliwood’s films have garnered a cult following not just in in Uganda, but all over the world. We spend a day on the set of the next Wakaliwood hit.

Isaac is one of the few filmmakers working in Luganda, the dialect of the Buganda, Uganda’s largest tribe. The films he makes are intended for his friends and neighbors, but are wildly successful beyond even the slums of Uganda. And are heavily pirated. Despite having to work on budgets that are less than $200, Isaac and his team have gone on to make more than 50 exciting films.

Isaac uploaded the trailers to “Who Killed Captain Alex”, Uganda’s First Action Movie and “Tebaatusasula” in January 2010 and both quickly went viral. At the time of writing, his YouTube channel has received more than 4.2 million views.
